PUNK (/rock) SONGS ABOUT SUPERMARKETS

I have long been a fan of The Clash, and familiar with their song “Lost in the Supermarket” (a song very personal to me, for reasons I will go into later), and had decided to explore more into On a little venture into British 70s punk rock, exploring the discovery of insanely underrated The Slits and The Raincoats. I thought hey, supermarkets feature quite heavily in British punk rock. There was The Clash’s “Lost in the Supermarket” written at a similar time, but plenty of others, here’s a little exploration o. Which led me to think about

  1. Lost in the Supermarket, The Clash (I visited this supermarket many times, living in a council estate near World’s End, Chelsea, before realising its history)
  2. Fairytale in the supermarket
  3. Shoplifting – The Slits
  4. Common People
  5. Breaking into Aldi – Fat White Family
  6. Persuasion – Soft Cell
  7. Shelf life – Citizen Fish (the last of the British bands in this main list)
  8. Apples and Oranges (Pink Floyd)
  9. God knows I’m Good (David Bowie)
  10. Slave (The Rolling Stones)
  11. cat food king crimson
  12. Pet Shop Boys- Shopping
  13. Meeting in The Aisle by Radiohead
  14. Let’s loot the supermarket again (The Deviants)
  15. The Last Mall by Steely Dan
  16. Warrior in Woolworths (X Ray Spex) (1978) (love the sax solo)
  17. Been caught stealing – Jane’s Addiction (honestly this song is so insanely fun- the same energy as Shoplifting)
  18. Iggy Pop – Supermarket
  19. The High for the supermarket – The Uninvited
  20. Strange – Galaxie 500 (1989)
  21. Queen of the Supermarket – Bruce Springsteen

  23. Stoned and Starving Parquet Courts (this song is a fucking BANGER- totally in my playlist of songs to blast in my headphones and dance alone in my headphones too)
  24. Sad Supermarket Song- Mozes and the Firstborn
  25. Store- The Mountain Goats
  26. Ain’t Life Grand- Widespread Panic
  27. Supermarket Fantasy – Screeching Weasel
  28. Chemical Bomb – The Aquabats (interesting how this supermarkets encouagre philosophy)

Songs where a supermarket visit is significant, but is not the predominant theme

  1. Saturday’s kids The Jam
  2. The Gift – Velvet Underground
  3. Safeway cart- Neil Young, Crazy Horse
  4. One Way or Another

Other honourable mentions but that don’t really feel punk:

  1. Paco! – Ladytron (The 3 below songs are not really my thing but may bring joy to someone else with different music taste, so I’ve included them! Also honourable menton, They Might Be Giants have some grocery store songs that are not really my thing)
  2. Wet Leg – Supermarket
  3. Shoppin from A to Z toni basil
  4. 24 Hour Store The Handsome Family
  5. Groceries- Yes, we’re open!

In the process of compiling this list, my view of supermarkets has changed. They are not just places where people buy things they need, to like, eat and maintain themselves to whatever standard they want- they are places where people experience the alienation of modern society, a heavenly respite for stoned people, a place where they contemplate their existence, where in that suffering and loneliness they occasionally fall in love.
